Why Slow Foods Tri-Cities?

Ask someone in Northeast Tennessee where they're from, and they'll tell you the county, the creek, and their family name. Food works the same way here. Everything has a source and a story.

The same hollows that hid moonshine stills fed families through hard winters. The same hands that split wood put up beans. What we call the “Appalachian foodway” is more song than system; a high-lonesome ballad sung across centuries about labor, kinship, hardship, and love.

Good

Food that tastes good and is good for us. We celebrate the flavors and traditions of the Appalachian foodshed and the farmers, producers, and cooks who bring them to life.

Clean

Food is produced in ways that don't harm the land, the water, or the people growing it. We support farming practices that work with nature, not against it.

Fair

Food that is accessible to everyone, and a food system that treats growers and workers with respect. Healthy, delicious food shouldn’t be a luxury.

Slow Food Tri-Cities is part of a global movement with deep local roots.

We believe food should be joyful, delicious, nourishing, made with care, and shared among friends. We believe food should be clean, grown in ways that protect our land and water. And we believe food should be fair–accessible to everyone, with dignity and fair wages for those who grow, cook, and serve it, and affordability for those who eat it.

We're working toward dinners that bring farmers and eaters to the same table; workshops on preservation, bread baking, and making your food dollars go further; a seed and garden tool library; a local foods directory; and a newsletter telling the real stories behind your food and community.

The Ark of Taste

Some of our most beloved regional foods are at risk of being lost forever. We're working to identify and protect them.

The Snail of Approval

We're developing a recognition program to celebrate local food businesses that are doing it right.
